It was probably just a little verbal mistake, but the letter from the clinic went to Lady Shin—Lady Lihua’s head lady-in-waiting not Lady Lishu’s head lady-in-waiting.

Don't worry if you are not sure who the 'Empress' is supposed to be, I still get confused by the family tree.

NumberTheory

The previous empress dowager is also the one who got slavery banned.

Yes, it was mentioned early and at least a couple times that Gyokuyou comes from the West. Keep in mind, however, that this show's setting is based on Imperial China, which is in the far East. The envoys from the "West" are speaking Turkish, which by Western standards makes them from the Middle East. Beyond that, this is not actually China, and certainly not the China of the apparent time period presented. Chocolate (i.e. cacao beans) and tobacco, both indigenous only to the Americas, would not be known to the China of that time period. The idea of using alcohol to sterilize is even further out of place, dating to the 19th century. So I wouldn't even hazard a guess about exactly where in the "West" Gyokuyou is supposed to come from.

Literally. Took me another rewatch and 3 other reactions to finally get it down 😅

Excellent discussion topics. We can see you hovering over something that you're trying to lock in on, but it's ok, keep at it, and one day your mind will be blown lmao. Ladies, not to lead you in anyway, but i strongly suggest you keep a notebook and try to draw family tree diagrams/ assumptions because many names will be dropped often, and you don't want an accidental verbal mistake like saaying that the clinic lady went to lady Lishu's pavillion instead of the actual Lady Lihua pavillion, and then snowball confusions from there :D

Yes! The Apothecary does in fact use items and practices from many different dynasties and centuries. There's a few people online who are weirdly sticklers about this, but I love it, since it's a fictional world and all, and it allows for so much more creative freedom. I knew sterilizing alcohol was a relatively recent thing, but thanks for providing what time it was actually from! This show has made me want to look extensively into the history of China and see how many things I can reference back to the show :) I would have no idea where to place Gyokuyou's nationality in terms of the real world; I can't think of anything to match. All I know is that the Western Capital which she hails from is technically still within the fictional country known as Li--though it is quite far away from Li's central capital where the palace is. It's just basically its own self-governing province. I believe the envoys are even further west, though them and Gyo are both considered foreign. But that's a discussion for another time.

Jinshi would look beautiful dressed in drag

Yeah Gyokuyou is from a desert-ish region at the western border of Li, the emissaries are from Shao wich is even further west than that but as pointed out west here is more "West Asia" not west in the modern euro/US centric way. From the tidbits we see Shao seems to be modeled after an amalgation of various west Asian countries/societies much like Li is an amalgamation of East Asian countries and societies.

If she is called just Empress or Empress Regnant or Former Empress Dowager it's the mother of the previous emperor, if she is called Empress Dowager it's the current emperors mother.
