Okay, okay... this may be another one where I admit that I was wrong about not wanting to watch it! I'm very intrigued about where her story is going after the ending of this episode!

Yea this is a great show. I think it came out right when covid started or during the beginning days so it was a pleasant watch during those earlier uncertain day.

Oh my goodness. Great drop. I will definitely enjoy watching your reaction to this miniseries.

Oh, cool. Love the show. A good reason for a rewatch

In about 1980 while in high school, I got a later edition of the same book (Modern Chess Openings) that Shaibel gave Beth. We called it the chess bible. Glad you are initially invested.

To answer your question about the rules, they evolved over quite a few centuries. As for whether you can lose your queen and still win, it's definitely still possible. It's true that it's decent sportsmanship to resign if you lose your queen, especially among serious players, but it's certainly not bad sportsmanship to play on. What he did, forcing her to resign, was WAY worse sportsmanship.

Mister Lou

When Beth name calls him without knowing what it meant had me rolling! She heard Jolene say that when she was angry, so she just assumed thats what you say when you're angry. 😂 cant wait for more chess drama!

Clay F

Among serious players, if you blunder losing your queen it a waste of time to continue playing. Shaibel taught Beth a good lesson in not letting her continue to play after blundering away her queen.

I'm well aware of the landscape, having been a club player and played in a number of large tournaments. A 9-year-old who hasn't even been to a club yet shouldn't be forced to resign. Saying "You should resign" is one thing. Refusing to play on is just rude

Great reaction, Teegan. I've watched this show numerous times with other reactors and you might be the only one who picked up on the fact that Beth's mom was a genius, too, based on her math PhD from Cornell. Mother's little helper (Valium) was definitely a thing among overworked mom's beginning in the 50's as the baby boom got underway. The tranqs Beth took were to keep the kids from bouncing off the walls because they're kids and are very energetic. A couple of last notes: fish on Fridays was definitely a thing among (at least) Catholics until Vatican II in 1965 when the pope gave his holy thumbs up and made it OK to eat meat on Fridays. My sisters had to endure it; I missed it as I was born in 1963. The Catholic themes continued at Methuen; the movie at the end is The Robe, which I had to watch every year for a long time (as well as The Ten Commandments and Ben-Hur, 2 movies pushing the 4-hour mark). I can't wait to continue this with you!

this show is drugs sex and rock n chess

Glen Roberts

I don't believe he did it out of malice or being rude. Normally I would agree with you but I think he did it more to teach Beth a life lesson.

Lukas

Thank you so much

I played a bit of chess when I was younger and heard good things about this series. I may check this out, especially if its just a mini-series with one complete story to tell.

Love that you’re on this show! It’s quite an eye-opener…And fine, you’re going to make me go check out Anya Taylor Joy’s new show Lucky. As for the poll, please please please include Ted Lasso as a choice! I don’t see it on your channel, but it just re-started, doing its 4th season, and I am ODing on the show like Beth on those green pills. But seriously, if there is a show that you will love, like deep into your soul, a show you’ll want to watch over and over to make you feel good again, Ted Lasso is it. And if you want to be shaken to your core and kept up at night thinking, then put Severance in your poll!!!!!!

i really enjoyed the robe

I don't know anything about chess either, but I really like this limited series and was able to follow along with thhe chess scenes. The first time I watched it was with a reactor and now I'm watching again with you.
