I recently visited a beautiful exhibition dedicated to botanical art created during Spanish scientific expeditions of the 18th century. These expeditions aimed to study and document the plant life of the Americas.

I went there with my artist friend, and of course we took lots of photo references — and I was so inspired that I’ve already started recording a new tutorial based on one of them!

The illustrations were not only important for research but also became valuable cultural and historical records. Many of these collections are now preserved in botanical archives and have even been recognized by UNESCO for their significance.

I went there with my artist friend, and of course we took lots of photo references to paint later — feel free to use these photos as inspiration for your own botanical illustrations!

It was such a lovely reminder of how closely art and nature are connected — and how watercolor, in particular, has always played a key role in capturing the beauty and detail of the natural world 🌿

Oh Ale! Everything is so beautiful: the exhibit and the photographs. Regarding the last photo, I know that plant as Aljaba, but in southern Argentina there's another variety with smaller, fuchsia-violet flowers, which we call Chilco. A few months ago, I was walking through San Martín de los Andes, where I live part of the year, and I saw them pruning a Chilco. I asked permission to take some branches and put them in water. They rooted, I planted them, and two took root... so I'm really hoping they thrive and bloom in the spring!

Thank you so much, Noe! 💛 I was actually telling my friend during the visit that I have an artist from Argentina in my community, and I always admire your stories with all those beautiful plants and flowers. It must be so special to live surrounded by that kind of nature! Your Chilco story sounds amazing — I love that you saved those branches and gave them a new life 🌿 I really hope they thrive and bloom in spring. Please share photos when they do, I’m so curious to see them!

If you do any tutorials it would be be nice to know the common name and or botanical name.
