I like that you took my advice, a sensual woman should review steamy movies. I'm sure that I was not the only one making that suggestion. Some of the characters are based on seventies, eighties real porn stars. John Holmes, Seka and Ginger Lynn especially. Definitely a turning point in porn. Check out some of their old films online. Nina Hartley plays the cheating wife of the director, the most beloved woman in porn in the nineties and two thousands. A founder of the Pink Ladies, an organization to help women in the industry. Highly educated, often gives college lectures, she started in 1984 and was making content for 40 years.

"Single White Female" is a cult classic erotic thriller, might like it.

This was inspired by the Golden Age of Porn which began around 1968, but the director set the time at 1977 and onward; and the Dirk Diggler character was based on real life actor John C. Holmes who starred in the Johnny Wadd porn film series but also porn films outside that character. Oh yes, Julianne Moore and Heather Graham were hot in this film and they both still are to this day!!! Anderson was hesitant to cast Heather because she never did any nudity in her past films, but her agent asked if she could read the for the part and she won the role. Yep, that was Alfred "Dr Ock" Molina as Rahad Jackson based on real life nightclub owner/drug dealer Eddie Nash. Those scenes from 2:25:00 to 2:37:00 of the drug/money robbery gone bad is a pretty much watered down version of what happened with Eddie Nash. You wanna talk about dark, when you have a chance, check out Wonderland (2003) with Val Kilmer as John C. Holmes and his involvement. John's drug addiction and behavior is what I believe set everything in motion for what happened at Eddie Nash's home and after. Beautiful job on your review of Boogie Nights, Colette!!!😘❤️❤️❤️💘💘💘

Making a mainstream film about the porn industry was a very courageous thing to do - especially for stars like Burt Reynolds. He must have felt that he was putting his career on the line. I like how the film did not make moral judgements about the characters but treated them as normal good people trying to make a living in a tough business. My favourite character was the lovely woman who mothered everybody - losing her son was so heart-breaking. I'm secretly hoping that when her son grows up he becomes re-united with her.

Another film to see about the porn industry is Hard Core(1979) with the great actor George C. Scott and written and directed by Paul Schrader (who wrote Taxi Driver and Raging Bull). It concerns a retired policman trying to find the truth about his daughter who died tragically in a porn film. Also try to check out the films of Robert Altman. Like Anderson he made films with sprawling plot lines and many characters - some of whom he allowed to improvise their own lines. Such films like Gosford Park - Nashville - and The Player. The Player is particularly good as its about the cut-throat world of movie people trying to get ahead in Hollywood. Not much sex though but engrossing films nevertheless.

I also felt sorry for the Seymour Hoffman as the sad gay man who flits around the edges of various scenes and never really fitting in. A lost character like so many others in the film.

Oh heck yeah. I sent this one in superchat once.

Mr Brainache

I don't know the movie but I'll watch it with You ;)

James

Yeah. That's excellent insight.

Magnolia is a powerful and comparable PTA film of the time. Not porny, but similar in vibes, to be sure.
