TRAINWRECKORDS: John Fogerty's "Eye of the Zombie"

John Fogerty rose from the swamp in 1985 to bring back the '60s Creedence sound... and then tried to get modern and sent his career back into the graveyard. Going to watch this in the morning as it's 3:30 AM where I'm at- super excited. I would have put a substantial bet on this being the Lulu episode based on your description but this will do nicely as well!

Juliane Davis

oh i wasn't even close, but i'm comforted by the fact that no one else was either

JasSpy

I've been keeping up an ultimate "Worst Lines of Trainwreckords" list that includes such examples as "peñius colada", "modren man", and most recently, Limp Bizkit very much so NOT respecting consent with “No doubt that I'd love to sniff on them panties now”. If you are reading this, have the time, have watched this new episode, and think you know what the worst line of lyrics from the covered album is, that is in this episode, I would appreciate leaving a reply with your opinion. I want to get an accurate consensus.

Jason Schneiderman

Now, I was 11, so it's not like I have a photographic memory of it, but the Achille Lauro cruise ship hijacking by terrorists was a big deal in 1985 — it's something I remember from (forgive me) headlines. It may have been the thing on his mind.

Jason Schneiderman

Also, "Change In The Weather" is basically "Heard It Through The Grapevine," isn't it?

Colton Rice

Actually I didn’t notice a single mistake this time

CJ

I'm thinking he knew we were expecting Lulu and pranked us 😅

LF R

This was nice to see in my notifs as my dog bullied me to feed him before dawn. At first I thought the anthro cat image was a plug for that one Stephen King mini series with cat people, maybe Fogerty did a song for its soundtrack. Now I think I need to go back to sleep 😅

ahmetyildizturan94

Damn, I wasn't excepting a crossover between John Fogerty and K-pop Demon Hunters.

Juhani Aho

it's the "grenade salad"-lyric

CJ

"We are not touching that, ever" Todd fears Kpop stans above anyone else

Judgesaturn507

'Boomers refusing to accept the inevitable passage of time' is the best genre of Trainwreckord

CJ

Above all else, I came away from this video with more respect for Fogerty. Apart from his constant putdowns of his band members, that is - no wonder he did everything himself on Centerfield. But he seems like a decently smart, funny, well-meaning guy with fine beliefs. I do wish you had mentioned, though, that his desire for control of his catalog is still so strong that just this year he did an album of rerecording CCR songs under his own name - call it John's Version. Anyway this wasn't as screaming bloody awful as most Trainwreckord albums but it's still a worthwhile look at a second chance that was squandered. That being said I think Fogerty is content with his legacy and has found peace in life, so it all came out in the wash.

CJ

Seconding "grenade salad". It's the only part that sounds goofy and not just vague and bland

Judgesaturn507

feels like a weird corruption of 'hate your next door neighbor but don't forget to say grace' from Eve of Destruction

CJ

Like he said, any Trainwreckord from the late 80s is basically a freebie because they all sound so dated

Anthachu

Yeah… I knew it couldn’t have been Lulu. That would’ve been too obvious. Looking forward to seeing this one though.

MJS

Good video, you remembered to charge for this one, right?

Paul McA

Heh, reference to The Cranberries and a Halloween playlist within a couple of minutes each other. That was a thing that had happened previously to much "Good job AI" amusement.

Jennifer Layton

Definitely grenade salad. I thought I'd heard it wrong at first.

StarCannonSupernova

A SPIRITUAL SEQUEL TO THE CCR EPISODE??? Todd you spoil us.

JasSpy

Gotta disagree with Todd on the "nothing happened in the 80s" thing. Sure, I do agree that the 2020s have so far been 1,000 times worse. But when Todd asked to "name something that happened in 1985", I was immediatly able to mostly remember the Contras in Nicaragua that the Reagan admin was funding and allowing to commit war crimes, which more or less reached a climax that year, and how the US congress attempted to stop the funding with the Bolan Amendments. And yes, I knew this only because I wanted to know where the video game series Contra got its name and looked it up a while back. But there was also the AIDS epidemic, South African apartheid, the Ethiopian famine (the reason behind the Live Aid concert, check out the Bandsplaining video about that). These are all things that would've been headlines in 1985. I do also agree with Todd's sentiment that the internet, personal computers, and smartphones really didn't exist back then, so a song about being bombarded by depressing world news would make more sense right now than back then. But Todd, I can't totally agree with this idea that nothing much happened during the 80s.

SecretGull

DON'T FORGET TO CHARGE FOR THE VIDEO.

Joel

It's the thrill of the fright...

Chris Ferrall

If you haven't seen Beato's interview with Fogerty, it's a nice counterweight. And it does skip 3 decades that this fills in. As an elder Gen Xer, yes it is hard to understand nuclear war dread now. Easy to forget the IRA, Qadaffi, Red Army Faction, etc. Not to mention SDI, Challenger, Chernobyl. But point taken.

Kristopher Bluth

This is about as subtle as a cinder block on your foot and the production sounds like crap (he couldn't afford a horn section?)...and I still like it better than CSNY's American Dream.

Jasper Phua

I thought he was going to be sarcastic but no he actually seemed sincere with that joke, which is weird because in the Bobby McFerrin One-Hit Wonderland he himself pointed out 'It's the 80s, baby! What's there to worry about besides AIDS, crack and nuclear war?!'

Kristopher Bluth

I kinda agree with all of this. EOTZ clearly failed, but you have to respect the attempt not to just coast on nostalgia. If I was in his position, I probably would have done the exact same thing.

CJ

I do understand that there weren't as many *deadly events* going on, at least. Mass shootings, global warming, and American fascism weren't really a thing yet (well, Reagan was kinda the latter, but people didn't seem to mind...). But I also wouldn't expect most people like Fogerty to be thinking about issues that only seemed to affect foreigners and marginalized Americans. Which is weird to say since I don't think Fogerty was ever conservative. But therein lies the problem - since he didn't specify the headlines that were bothering him, it was really pointless of him to write a song about it.

Pietro Gagliardi

The thing that I can't get over is why he sounds so out of tune, especially when screaming. I just a few days ago relistened to all the CCR albums (except Mardi Gras) and he didn't have that issue at all. (Although I will say: if he wanted to try to stretch his stylistic muscles, he probably should have just tapped back into whatever he was doing on Pendulum; *that* album is a lot more stylistically diverse than I remembered.)

CJ

I would definitely rather listen to the best Fogerty/CCR songs than anything by Neil Young, but that's just me

Jasper Phua

Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon somehow the only Boomers to survive with their dignity intact.

Jasper Phua

I don't even mind your usual ads but this has to be the funniest placement of your Nebula sponsorship lol.

Jordan Blossey

Almost spit my drink at the "HEADLINES" screech you did!

Alina

Sody can... we all heard "sody can", right? I gotta say, Todd, as someone born in the USSR in the mid-80s, I can think of at least one significant news event of the era...

John Rogan

It was super fucking weird to see Todd turn towards the camera

Shiny Skunk

Ugh of course Fogerty's a Yankees fan.

aendi

I wanna know, have you ever seen a brain?

Tom Carter

They're Fogerty and the Brain, Fogerty and the Brain! One is a genius, the other's insane!

margo

I was screaming at the video for that bit, wonderful engagement bait

Sean Wrona

The guy who owned his catalog is Saul Zaentz. You had it as "Zanz" in a subtitle.

Sean Wrona

Oh, he intentionally spelled it wrong to diss him. Okay.

Adequately Sized Dog

I like how nicklebackgettingkindafunky.gif is becoming a running gag on this series.

RedBedroomRecords

not if you were LGBTQ, back then with how awful AIDS was(and the Reagan administration and subsequently Bush St not really giving a damn about it), just being gay was a risk in itself.

RedBedroomRecords

Eh I think a lot of 80s stuff sounds better compared to a lot of 90s stuff.

RedBedroomRecords

believe it or not Jeff Dunham is actually really popular in the Middle East, they LOVE Achmed the Dead Terrorist.

Andrew Davey

OMG, John Fogerty... Again? Todd, you spoil us! While I was totally prepared for the inevitable(?) Metallica/Lou Reed "Lulu" Trainwreckord, I just had a feeling you were going to surprise us, and surprise us you did! Now, I need to watch this immediately and see just how bad this Fogerty solo album really got.

RedBedroomRecords

I actually like a lot of the 80s albums by 60s and 70s musicians.

RedBedroomRecords

I'd argue Reynolds made some good films after Boogie Nights, I personally enjoyed that Dukes of Hazzard movie.

Sykonee

I was working a music shop in a small town when his Second Big Comeback (Blue Moon Swamp Era) hit, and man, were the people in that small town ever ecstatic over that record.

Eric Darling

Fogerty is from the Bay Area and in another clip in this video he does have an A's hat. My dad was a contemporary of his and also started as a Yankees fan as a kid (and not the Giants) because baseball on TV was weird back then and the only televised game was the big national game of the week which the Yankees were very often part of in the 50s-early 60s. So just due to exposure it makes some sense why Fogerty would like the Yankees.

Herbieguy

I'm surprised this even qualifies for a trainwreckord.

RedBedroomRecords

I am so glad I'm not a sports fan period so I have the luxury of not giving a damn which celeb is a an of which team.

Kristopher Bluth

You briefly featured Giant here, and they might make a decent One-Hit Wonderland. They actually have a lot in common with Autograph: session guys who should’ve been an anonymous corporate rock band but tried to ride the hair metal wave instead (only at its end instead of its beginning). They even put out a new album this year.

Patrice Keville

Heh. I used to see this album in the used bin at record stores from time to time back in the '90s. I never looked at the label to see who it was (I was too busy looking for R.E.M. albums), so, based on the cover alone, I'd gotten into my head that it was a Pantera record. (Pantera, panther...yeah.) Bit of a shock to find out years later that it was a John Fogarty album.

David Gutierrez

Great video! Here are my pics for future episodes of Trainwreckords... - Bionic – Christina Aguilera – - Nathan Micheal Shawn Wanya – Boys II Men – - Soul Dancing – Taylor Dayne – Taylor Dayne tried to write some of her own music... and ended up writing herself off the charts. - Masterpiece Theater - En Vogue – - Shadows and Light – Wilson Phillips – For the follow up to their multi-platinum debut, Wilson Phillips made few changes. They made some changes in their sound, their image, their management team... which resulted in a less uplifting and much darker album than their debut. Following internal struggles, poor sales, and a cancelled tour, Wilson Phillips broke up. - Face the Music - New Kids on the Block – - Hootie Mack – Bell Biv Devoe – - It’s ain’t what u wear, it’s how U play it – Another Bad Creation – - Natural Disaster – Bethany Cosentino – (2023, so maybe too recent to cover, but would make an awesome episode) - the Best Coast frontwoman decided to put her band on hiatus and, in 2023, release a solo album… consisting of what sounded like rejected 90’s Sheryl Crow and 2000s Liz Phair pop songs with general, nonspecific storytelling and bad lyrics and rhymes. The album had almost no sales, few streams and downloads, and little to no radio airplay. There was no tour, and many Best Coast fans didn’t even know she put out a solo record. Disaster indeed.

Russet Burbank

The "ghosts" on the back cover are one of a bunch of avant garde sculptures and other art pieces in the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada. Check 'em out if you're ever trekking to Death Valley from the back side.

Russet Burbank

Then he had to change it to Vanz when he got sued

Oisín Harrell

My theory on the album cover: it was supposed to be a picture of Fogerty that would later get touched up to look more zombie-like, but someone at the label thought this would kill the album on sight and told the artist to make him look more like a beastman instead. And Fogerty either 1.) Doesn't know what a zombie looks like or 2.) Didn't give a shit about the image and marketing side of the album and thought it was close enough. I didn't see any major errors, though I do agree with JasSpy's comment. Like I get that the world finds new ways to embarrass itself and die everyday now...but if nothing happened in the eighties, then what were the punks and the political rappers going on about?

Dennis Byron Gonzalez

EOTZ’s cover art could’ve worked for Pantera’s glam period in the 80s. And, if you’ve ever looked at the albums pre-Cowboys Fom Hell, it might’ve been an improvement.

James Washburn

Something that happened in 1985? Philly’s cops bombed their own civilians?

Michael

You'd think giant would have been bigger

Michael

Sail away sounds like a real return to form. "It came out of the sky" by CCR was also about aliens. Fogerty alien concept album when?

Russet Burbank

There were no west coast baseball teams until he was 13, so that might explain it.

Shiny Skunk

That's crazy I didn't know west coast teams were that recent!

MikeVG

In a similar note to those examples I'd also include IIcons by Naughty by Nature which fits a lot of the criteria (barely any hits, the one single nobody remembers, band drama, a member leaving, money troubles). Hell I'd say that fits all of the criteria, that and also being a blatant trend chaser.
