Blaze Bears have some of the worst reputations of all Spirit Beasts in the Azure Hills. To call someone a Blaze Bear is to call them a stupid, rude, disgusting, and gluttonous brute.

However, this exaggerated reputation is because, by and large, humans tend to survive Blaze Bear attacks, and so their behaviour is more well documented—and the anger greater given the insults the Bears levy against them.

Indeed, while the Spirit Beasts have no problems stealing crops and livestock, raiding caravans, and all sorts of bandit-like behaviour, direct deaths from Blaze Bear events are shockingly low.

They are seen as stupid because 'cunning humans' manage to 'escape' them when the bear probably wasn't trying to kill them in the first place, and was just finding amusement in making the human run and scream.

They are seen as rude because they like to cook their food, and human houses and caravans are conveniently placed piles of wood. For what is ruder than to come back to find a bear passed out in a food coma in your front garden after burning down your house to cook his supper? To add insult to injury, when confronted by enraged humans, the bears tend to just amble off afterwards, completely ignoring the people they just majorly inconvenienced.

Their eating habits are rather messy; they tend to get juices smeared on their faces, hands, and arms, and then use their long tongue to lick off the detritus, making it look like they drool and slobber everywhere... when in fact not long after their meals, they fastidiously wash themselves in rivers, which is why a Blaze Bear territory is seen as incomplete without plenty of places to wash after dinner.

As for gluttonous… there is no real defense for that one. They do like to eat.

Blaze Bears mostly live solitary lives throughout the province, with particular presence nearby Ash Forest. They are known to gather regularly in the forest’s center, to do what, nobody knows.

Like other Spirit Beasts, they seem content to live as base animals. Few, if any, construct dwellings beyond holes in the ground. An occasional carved totem, pile of stacked rocks, or purpose built back scratcher may be found there, along with some tools or baskets clearly stolen from human dwellings.

An average Blaze Bear stands 3.5 meters (11 feet tall) when standing up, with the largest ever seen being a male 5 meters (16 feet) tall.

They are red and grey in colouration, like fire and ash. They have a thick mane of “Blaze Fur” that trails from their forehead to their back. They ignite this fur in combat, giving them both offense and defence.

They have little to no fur on their forearms; instead they have thick callused skin that looks scaley, and has spines, forming natural bracers.

They have elongated bottom canine teeth, forming almost tusks, and along, prehensile tongue.Their claws are around 8-9 inches long, surprisingly dexterous, and hellishly sharp.Art of Huishou and Baolin by Nakomo.

Holy shit. That looks totally bad ass.

Desy

Is the resemblance to Monster Hunter’s Arzuros (a bear monster) intentional?

TempestK

Was not expecting Brother Bear, but I'm here for it!

Ike

Bear cavalry! The best cavalry!

Silvris

... Those are literally Azuros. Flaming Azuros, but still Azuros.

TempestK

Also, anyone else getting Monster Hunter vibes? Edit: Ah, so it was intended. Cool.

Angel

I’m getting Tai Lung from Kung Fu Panda vibes. That face! Little Brother has got to be feelin’ himself a bit sitting up there.

Desy

Ray Yang

I feel like the smarter observers have got to have noticed that people survive blaze bear attacks at rates higher than normal bear attacks ...

The remind me a lot of the Arzuros from Monster Hunter https://monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Arzuros_Photo_Gallery Specifically the red version https://monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Redhelm_Arzuros_Photo_Gallery I do think they are cool and seem to think that most humans are the stupid and weak ones, with the low level cultivators that Azure hills used to have that was half true, but now that everyone is getting a boost they will probably need to get some connections to the humans. good thing that now they seem to be getting at least a full village of little brothers to help with that. I wonder what could be their products to trade. I'm sure they would be willing to go far for Vajra's honey and probably once her kids start creating their own hives they would want to have some kind of coexistence with them.

It's a neat idea to follow the same design language as Arzuros, it quickly paints the Blaze Bears in a more complete light, for people that've played a MonHun with Arzuros in it, since they know that fight and the animations. It's a good use of shorthand, making the same design language of the Arzuros (a bit goofy, a bit brash, but powerful and quicker than it looks)

Seeing Baolin from his own perspective and the bears', I hadn't realized he was a hottie 😆

KnightOfCrows

It doesn't seem like we're going to get any, just because the last few breaks had au chapters doesn't mean we always will

Amazing artwork. Did think that was a Donkey Kong-esque tie at first haha

KyoDaDungeon!!

The art look awesome! With…one thing that caught my eye as a flaw. The lower jaw looks 6 inches longer than the upper jaw/teeth. Even with the roar it wouldn’t hang like that…and my moms and artist so I know I’m super critical, I don’t want to discourage, so - positives: the colors and shading are beautifully done, the artistic flames capturing movement and emotion. The humans body, head and hands are proportional (very hard and easy to screw up) and even small he looks handsome and like he has personality. So everything else looks good, it’s just that jaw I can’t look away from once I noticed. The description of Blaze Bears was really great! It was spot on for their reputation and what we’re now seeing - they have a bad rap because people survive to tell the tales! So well thought out! I was nodding along with a smirk. Thanks author man and thanks to the artists! I love art…and yes critiquing. Can’t help it. I grew up with my mom teaching me that stuff. Too bad I can’t draw worth a darn.

I've really been hoping for a chapter drop. I need anything I can get for a distraction. My ac went out Wednesday and first repair availability is Monday. It's hot n humid days and not so hot n extremely humid nights.

I wonder if the future Blazing Bear Sect will invent a new weapon style based on the bears they learned cultivation from. I know the "founder" used a spear, but maybe something like a twin axe style would be able to mimic the bear claw sweeps better. A fire breathing berserker would be so cool.
