Hi, everybody.

Since returning to Hoard from focusing on RBP, I feel like I've been doing quite well - I'm very happy with the progress of the story, I finally feel like I've got a solid handle on the plot of Book 3, and I've been doing a good job of sticking to a three-chapter-a-week schedule.

So today, I wrote another chapter. And in my editing pass, I realized that it is completely unnecessary.

It's...some light character work, and otherwise just kingdom-building fluff, covering only material that's more suited to being noted in asides in more plot-relevant passages. It doesn't progress the plot or anyone's characterization, and those are the requirements I have for writing a piece of story. Either the story itself or characters make progress, otherwise there's no point.

This has...genuinely never happened to me before, but it happened to the work I've done over the last two days. There's no point. If I were reading through the completed story, I'd just glaze past this chapter. I could skip it entirely and lose nothing.

I'm so frustrated. I can't publish this; it's just plain not up to my standards. It isn't bad, it's just pointless, and frankly that's worse.

So...I don't have a chapter for you today. I've wasted a couple days of effort and got nothing, and it's now Wednesday evening and I do not have the energy to go back to the drawing board.

I will go back to the drawing board tomorrow. Perhaps some of this can be salvaged. Otherwise, I'll just start over completely and file it away in a sub-folder. Maybe release it as extra content sometime. I dunno. Right now I'm too tired and too disappointed and mad at myself to make a concrete plan.

Anyway, that's why there is no midweek chapter this time. I'm sorry. I just wanted everybody to know, I'm not having another mental episode, in fact things are going quite well. I have been working. I just...completely fucked up. I guess it happens to all of us.

I will have a chapter for you, a good one that's worth reading, as soon as I can.

Thanks, all.

We trust you not to pawn off slop on us just to hit an arbitrary metric. Happy for a chapter whenever it's ready. Glad to hear you are feeling alright at least, hope that continues. Keep sticking to your self care needs!

Fluff without significant progress can be a fun aside. I would definitely read it at a later time if you chose to publish it. That said, I appreciate your dedication to your artistic principles. Glad to hear things are going better for you and it’s has been a blessing to have so many new chapters of Hoard to read! Don’t be too hard on yourself and know that being “better” doesn’t have to mean “perfect”. Your work is awesome and delays on occasion to match your quality threshold are totally worth the wait. Blessings, friend, and thank you for your dedication to this wonderful series! 😊

Save it as .5 chapter for later! Or a post volume shenanigan

i know you might be unhappy with yourself but this doesn’t feel like a fuckup to me !!! not every single word you write can be exactly what the story needs at that exact moment, and that’s okay ! you can always pull pieces or ideas for use in later scenes, and now you have gotten that writing out of your head to make room for new writing that will do a better job of moving the plot or developing characters :)))

It's fine if things take their time or explore avenues that build the world without building the story. We trust you to do the best you can.

Not a writer myself though I've dabbled enough to know how hard it is. I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often! No worries, an interlude or optional .5 chapter is lovely (if/ when you're happy with the shape of the arc and are sure this won't change shape a bit to become a normal chapter) and as always the ideal for me as a reader is for you to have a balanced, humane process that supports your brain & long term good work (shouldn't punish you for normal things & life events, includes breaks, etc). Thanks as always!

Nothing wrong with an occasional beach episode. We will look forward to reading what you've written when you're happy to release it, whether that's as an extra or reworked into chapter material. Not going to complain about anything giving us more time with these characters!

Honestly I disagree with the notion that every single chapter needs to advance the plot and/or characterisation. I think some breather fluff chapters every once in a while is a nice thing. Whether that's just relaxation, or showing how an average day where nothing special happens looks like, or kingdom building like in this case. I for one would be very happy to get some insights into how they're establishing their realm in more than just side remarks, especially. It's one thing to have pointless filler chapters just to pump the numbers, but this honestly doesn't sound like that at all, especially if you considered it worth writing in the first place. Even if after the fact you now disagree. I think it'd have been nice to have. Just my two cents, it's your story after all. Anyhow don't beat yourself up over it like that.

Would love to see it as extra content :)

If it works as a chapter on its own, fine. If it doesn't, you've just gotten a head start on some world-building and character-building. When you do reach a place in the main plot where they would fit as asides they'll now just need a bit of trimming and fitting rather than constructing from scratch. Doesn't sound like a wasted day from where I'm sitting. But thanks for letting us know that today turned out to be one of those future-proofing days. There are some authors who'll publish immense quantities regularly and lose track of whether it actually hangs together or serves a purpose; it's good to see (once again) that you're willing and able to resist that false metric.
