About the satanic panic - I fear we might get something like that in my country when it comes to internet cults. In Norway the police release a yearly threath assesment. And in this years assesment they specifically mentioned the online cult 764, which are young men (usually between 14 - 17 years old) that blackmail young (usually) girls into hurting themselves, with the end goal of getting them to take their own life on camera. This cult is real, and there is at least one example of a person i Norway taking part in this sort of depraved behaviour (don't know if he specifically was part of the cult or not). But does that really warrant including this in a report about the biggest threats to Norway as a society, under the heading “Society-Threatening Crime in the Year Ahead”? The other things that are being mentioned are related to organized crime and such.

Mr Leddy

🙂 Stay cool! & kind.

Talking like that Nathan guy did is terrible and morally wrong, but even if it wasn't...Konstantin? If I were to fantasize about killing someone and going to jail for life, it for damn sure wouldn't be a loser like Konstantin Kisin!

Stephen McGlinchey

Glad you mentioned (behind the bastards) the incredibly annoying American podcast format of having one supposedly serious researcher and one or more comedians whose role is to interrupt as often and as loudly as possible with painfully unfunny inanities.

Andy First

Hearing you guys take Emma Vigeland down a notch was extremely cathartic for me

Kelly 🇮🇪 🇦🇺

IT WAS MATT WHO FIRST BROUGHT THE ABORTION THOUGHT EXPERIMENT?! Well God damn.

What's That Noise?

I would really like to hear Matt's thoughts about gamification in education.

Scott Walkers Ghost

Everybody knows you can’t claim galaxy brain status if you’re not knowledgeable of septic tanks. "Septic" originates from the Greek sēptikos ("putrefactive" or "making rotten"), derived from sēpein ("to make rotten") 🧐

Randy

Can't believe your disclaimer at the end wasn't just, "anyway that's what Kip Thorne says. We don't even agree with it."

Wish Dragon

What is up with this misrepresentation of Emma's takes on doom scroll? Presenting this as if she is giving credence to Pizza gate? How bad faith is this? Is this really what they thought she was saying?

Noah Heck

I didn’t write down the time, but there was a chunk when Matt and Chris seemed almost genuinely perplexed about conspiracist in the US. I am probably about the same age as Matt, and my parents are Baby Boomers. Now, this impression is entirely subjective, so maybe it was unique to my experience, but growing up in the latter 1980s and the 1990s, it always seemed very much that pop-culture narratives relied on the notion that some “they” was secretly controlling everything. Almost all of our stories involved some secret cabal of somebody lurking beneath the surface of society. It sort of feels, in my old age, that what was a staple of the fiction we all enjoyed has, somehow, embedded itself in our view of reality. It seems like a great many people now believe what we all use to know was just a good narrative hook for a rollicking story. I have always tended to a structuralist view of history, which makes this an uncomfortable theory. Our current problems should be explainable by looking at the structure of our society and seeing how it shaped our views. I cannot, however, shake the sense that it “feels” like our paranoia arose in how we produced fiction, probably some time in the 1970s, and then migrated into how we viewed reality.

Amy

This episode was so cathartic! I do sometimes enjoy BtB but I also dislike the guests because they seem pointless. “It Could Happen Here” feels like political propaganda and I question their journalistic integrity. I’d be interested in you guys covering them more. Same with Emma Vigeland and other characters from TMR. Seems like a less grifty version of TYT.

Linda Sears

Hearing Matt and Chris bickering about scheduling and plans is all too familiar. I’m a planner, and my husband is not. He is really great at adapting to change while I get all stressed and frustrated.

Linda Sears

From talk of overflowing septic tanks to Eric Weinstein’s tortured love affair with Grok. Is there a pattern here?

Linda Sears

When you were discussing how Epstein is appearing to be the mastermind behind everything bad, it made me think of Woody Allen’s movie Zelig. I imagined a grainy black and white photo of Epstein sitting beside Stalin or some footage of him hanging out with Hitler and his gang at the Eagle’s Nest.

Dries T.

Whoa wait, did Matt really say "Don't teach your mother to suck eggs"?! What quaint faintly disturbing idiom is this?

Joseph Sullivan

As a Majority Report subscriber I’m nonetheless pleased to have Emma Vigland challenged, there’s been a lot more conspiracism on that show lately, and they don’t seem to be applying a ton of critical thinking where Epstein is concerned. More like wishful thinking.

Nina Davies

I read about the boy with the box cutter on X. I spent several minutes wondering what a box cutter was. I was imagining something like a hedge trimmer but especially for box hedges. A pretty dangerous bit of kit to take to a debate in London, I thought! Maybe the young man is employed at Hampton Court? Or one of the Royal Parks? But, disappointingly, the weapon in question was a Stanley knife. A dear old Stanley.

murray shalom

I’ll agree that Epstein conspiracies are running amok. I don’t think that Vigland taking the insanely anodyne position that Epstein death was mysterious and that she doesn’t believe the official narrative is worth focusing on. Anyone who listens to that clip will find it obvious she isn’t a believer in the wilder conspiracies about Epstein. It’s hard to call people wacky conspiracy theorists for them noting that the man most likely to be killed in prison was found dead in prison under mysterious circumstances. As was his close associate Jean-Luc Brunel in a French prison. Vigland outright says she thinks he’s dead. What bothers me is that there has to be this whataboutism regarding the left. A mostly powerless but passionate movement in America. A movement that sees itself oppressed and maligned constantly by well funded right wing personalities, this just feeds into it. Seriously you can go after Rachel Maddow for saying much crazier things but you’re focused on a person saying mostly reasonable things that the is completely in the mainstream. It would be insane for people to just trust the official story about the presidents former best friend who dies in prison while on trial as the world’s largest and best connected pedophille.

Tasty3141

This was a particularly excellent episode of SM. Thanks Chris and Matt!

Paul Ditta

Am I allowed to openly hope Konstantin Kisin accidentally falls down the stairs six or seven times?

Conor McGee

Hard to pronounce names: * Epstein - yes, fair * Weinstein - again, fair enough * Megan - hang on

Curtis Kofoed

I think Chris misunderstood the point Emma Vigeland was making. She wasn’t saying that we need to go back and reassess pizza gate as if pizza gate itself is true or credible. Her point is that we should probably go back and reassess pizza gate from the standpoint of now, knowing that there appears to have been some sort of relationship between the founder of Fort Chan and Epstein. And yes, that relationship is not necessarily proof that this kind of culture war stuff was Astroturf in that direction. But I think it’s a bit naïve to overlook how entrenched Epstein was with people like Steve Bannon, who have been very clear that that kind of Astroturf stuff is the kind of political activity they want to engage in.

Sam Stephenson

Re epstein and moral panics, I think one of the important things is how politically useful it is and how its politically useful for all groups in society. Satanic panic moms could use the satanic panic rhetoric against DnD players but not vice versa but here Dems can use it to attack republicans and vice versa.

ValueSoup

Matt's mic was quite a lot louder than Chris' in this episode. Did you forget to normalize the audio levels?

Tim Tripp

Leftwing frustration with the current situation may explain some of the tendency towards violent fantasy. I agree with Matt that America is not at the point where violence is something that should be considered.

Leon White

Epstein rhymes with Einstein, notice how *ein sounds from German are always consistent? Weinstein is exactly the same, sounds like Einstein with a W at the beginning. Any other pronunciation is Americans mutilating language, as is their habit. Please don't follow their deviant path! If you want to start saying "steen" then it would have to be applied consistently, and nobody says Weensteen, although it would be very funny. Bruce Springsteen however, fair game for pronouncing with a steen sound, even in German!

Paul Rains

I was hoping that in the end we could all agree that the archetypal saying “eat the rich” - in this instance - was a valid and compelling arrangement of vowels and syntax. The reverse psychology alone on the plutocratic class is worth the effort to maintain, at least, the mystery of it one day actually happening.

Bernd

Not sure about this one guys. Putting Doomscroll into the same bucket as the Weinsteins is a tough pill to swallow. Maybe the world is a fucked up place but just not for you? Maybe?

Miguel Vissers

Chris definitely has some Gengar energy to him: They are most active during full moons, creeping out in the dead of night and disguising themselves as shadows; they may even enters sleeping homes to lurk in the dark. They will mimic every movement their targets make until they lower their guards. Then, they strike, draining their victims' life force as sustenance. Many Gengar have learned to feed on fear, simply following victims in the shadows and mimicking them almost, but not quite perfectly. This cultivates great paranoia in victims, which they can then feast on. Other tricks Gengar have been known to use include: laughing maniacally in the shadows, lighting their red eyes in the darkness, and chanting mysteriously in the distance. But also: In spite of their infamous insidiousness and cruelty, domesticated Gengar that are being kindly looked after by their trainers are much friendlier, and their smiles appear to be less creepy.

Gary Johnson

Think of it as an undercurrent I reckon Martin. Not necessarily an obvious or widespread threat but another genuinely twisted one working it's way day to day around the Internet looking for possible victims/perpetrators and the police can't name nor find them all but maybe highlighting one shines some light on the reality that these freaks exist and it may get them some extra wonga to keep an eye on them and so on. And a bit of attention to their existence too. Seems you know about them but how many people do really. When I first learned of them it took some time and checking for it to sink in

Kevin Nyberg

I read that CERN discovered a new particle with the large hadron collider. I bet Eric is stoked about the new physics!

Melinda

Is has to be Sandslash or Grumpig, doesn't it? Also, did I hear just the faintest note of non-credulity in Eric's voice? I didn't think Eric and scepticism were on anyone's Bingo card, anywhere, ever.

m/z

Glad you guys covered the behind the bastards episodes I recommended!

Joseph B

Did anyone contact the Behind the Bastards guys to issue a correction? They seem to do it from time to time, so it would be good to point out the error in tracing the emails. Overall I think their disclaimers were more than strategic, so I doubt they’d retract the overall theme of the episodes (which I take to be “look at how epstein was around when these things were new” rather than “epstein created these things” let alone something more conspiratorial) but even so.

Andrew Ulmer

Matt's folksy sayings have officially peaked with "dont try to teach your mother how to suck eggs"

Paul Bowman

Re the Doomscroll stuff and the gleeful willingness to believe in cannibalism and all the deepest depravities the human imagination likes to come up with... While I ofc agree with Chris that all cultures do this in various situations, I also agree with Matt that it feels somehow the spirit of the Salem Witch Trials continues to persist somehow in American culture. Regardless of where on the left/right spectrum people sit on, on their particular ethno-confessional background. Scottish folk singer Dick Gaughan once made a crack about the dourness of Scottish Presbyterianism having seeped into all Scots culture, regardless of what boot you kick with. I think a little of the same applies to the American cultural heritage. By coincidence I was having a conversation with Claude just yesterday on the vexed question of the relationship between the Swiss Reformation and witch burning, and what exactly was Zwingli's problem (he was a maniac for seeing agents of the devil everywhere). The AI's line was it was something to do with his particular reformed theology that swept away all mediations (saints, etc), his insistence on divine ominscience, predestination, etc, meant that the source of all evil must be direct agents of Satan (witches) rather than just "shit happens" or whatever. Wasn't entirely convinced that really bottoms it out (and for clarity, the Catholic valleys in Switzerland went equally bonkers for burning witches at the time, in competition with the Zwinglyites and Calvinists). But still. There's still some cultural leavings I feel. I know Miller said The Crucible was specifically about McCarthyism, but it feels like it's about an aspect of American culture more generally. Left and right.

I love BTB - it’s my other fav podcast-I would imagine Robert Evans would be ok with that mistake being pointed out - he’s done many hundreds of episodes I’d be surprised if he never slipped up

Eric vs Grok - totally got a "mirror mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all" vibe from it Navel Gazer

I love how they emphasize how "Well put together and coherrent" the email from Epstein to the Activision president was, and as soon as they start reading it, its chalk full of f-bombs and toxic locker room talk

Steelyphil

Lmao yes Duolingo is a complete waste of time

What's That Noise?

To be fair to the box cutter guy, it would be funny to shout "for the white race!" As you kill Konstantin Kisin, it would confuse him so much

Monica B.

I'm sooo late to listening, but this was a great one. The glee the centrist-y whatever podcasters talk about the epstein stuff is so wack. It's not just online either - I had a real in person convo with a real friend who was like CANNIBALISM about 'hey, lets bring it back to center those actual victims we 100% know about who have spoken out and deserve justice, cool?'. (She got it, I think.) The only one I related to in the clips you played was the gal who kept saying 'ew' when her co-host read a quote about bikini clad buxom women like three times, seeming to relish in the chance to say that stuff on the air. Her 'ew' was for the content, sure, but also I choose to believe for her skeevy co-host who would NEVER talk like that, I'm sure, except when he can, over and over. Sigh. FYI I also think murder is bad and not even good as a political tactic. Imagine that!
