For over a decade, its release seemed like an impossibility, but 20 years ago, Mother 3 entered our world—and then proceeded to never leave Japan. While it superficially resembles the earlier Mother games, this long-awaited sequel differs greatly in tone and structure, yet somehow delivers a satisfying (if surprising) final installment of Shigesato Itoi's beloved RPG series. On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Reid Young, Charlie Verdin, and Everdraed (all of Fangamer) as the crew turn off their Happy-Happy Boxes and sit down to discuss the Game Boy Advance game that gives new meaning to the phrase "tonda gossa."

After all these years, I do wonder if they had put Mother 3 on DS instead of GBA would we have gotten it in English. I do own one of the few Mother 3 things released (digitally) in the US. Inexplicably we got 2 of the soundtracks on iTunes back in 2007 (Mother 3i and Mother 3 +). I jumped on those immediately in the vein hope that would convince Nintendo to do a US release of the game.

Great episode. Would love a second parter on this same topic with this crew.

A very well put together episode, but is this going to become more normal for Retronauts? Talking for 2 hours about a game that isn't even available in and tacitly endorse piracy as the only way to access it? Just a strange subject matter to cover so extensively. It does sound like a great game I would enjoy playing, but there is no way I'm every going to figure out all the hoops you have to jump through to even acquire the game just to have to play it on something that isn't even a dedicated gaming platform. If Nintendo doesn't want to release this in English on an actual gaming platform then that's a real shame but trying to figure out how to get it to run on something that isn't a gaming platform isn't going to be a pleasant experience either.

During the 2 year timespan it took me to play Mother 3 I was juggling work, college, my daughter being born, and my mother's passing. I had modded my PSP so I figured I'd play whenever I could squeeze it in, though eventually I couldn't play it in public. I honestly don't know how I finished it, especially with the audio emulation being slightly off for the timed hits. Needless to say, while I encourage others to play it, I'm in no rush to revisit it myself.
