Crash Team Racing - Behind The Scenes (Patreon)

Hey everyone, sorry for the delay on this one but part of the process in making this video involved me REALLY wanting it finished before Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled's launch date (June 21st) and obviously as you've since seen, my plan worked!

Why Crash Team Racing?

This one is pretty easy, but yeah... the impeding release of the remake did prompt me to do this now.

But, in fairness, Crash Team Racing has been LONG overdue on this channel with people rightly expecting me to cover it after talking about the original Crash trilogy TWO YEARS AGO NOW (feels weird to think about how long it's actually been)

I've also had several requests for this one but for one reason or another I put the idea off as I wanted to wait until the opportune moment. It then reached a point of "now or never" with the impending remake release, so I went ahead with it!

Why not the other Crash Racing games?

Honestly, I just didn't plan this one as far ahead as I should have and did;t really have enough time to look at the others on the run-up to CTR:NF, so I just did what I could.

That said I'm very happy with what I was able to do in a period of around 3 weeks, ESPECIALLY the editing. EVERYTHING was editing in a grand total of 7 days! (even less if you take into account I  was only able to do it around my work hours and other family commitments at the time!)

I've already started playing Crash Nitro Kart for the next video but scripting for this Crash Team Racing video took a lot longer than I thought. I wanted to at least try and lean into a little bit of a story being told amidst the review for this one and for once... the video is pretty much exactly how I wanted it to be in that respect.

Time Travel:

Partly inspired by Avengers Endgame... I wanted to bring in the idea of travelling around back and forth in my channels timeline, and using that as a way of setting up upcoming videos as well as explaining various parts of my channels history (both internal and external parts of the channel), as well as eventually justifying some video remakes in the future...

I was a little uneasy at first when I edited it all together as this camera sequence has ended up being the longest on-camera segment in the channels history so far, and I know not everyone is into review channels telling their own stories but... I just wanted to... so I did!

It may not seem it right now, but I've actually thought about this a LOT and have multiple instances this already set up in my head to do in future videos. Some of these will lead up to the "future Pete" having to travel back in order to do what was done in this video!

The idea to have it all start in Crash Team Racing is basically because I liked the idea of time traveler appearing in completely the wrong moment in time... and I thought a second Crash Team Racing was a fun way to explain that confusion! The contents of the box will likely get explained after Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled... whenever that happens.

The Effect:

In order to make this look right in my own head I needed at least ONE shot where there are two of me on screen at once. Anyone familiar with masking will know how this was done, and how simple it is to do... but considering it's my first attempt at doing this in one of my videos I think it turned out really well.

I had to ensure I set the camera's focus to manual mode, and keeping it locked in place while changing clothes so the camera was under the exact same conditions for both characters. I'm actually REALLY lucky the weather was the same too, as most of my lighting comes from a very basic window on the one side of the room.

That alone looked a little too simple for me though, so a good amount of camera shake, blur and sound effects to make everything have some impact worked a treat in the end!

Puppetronious' new wardrobe!

To further cement the fact that I'm happy to keep this character in my videos, I went ahead and bought some actual clothes for him. These were not expensive in the slightest, as it turns out clothing for someone of that size is VERY easy to find, and very cheap to buy!

To go with his clothes I also commissioned my friend and patron CRANTIME to draw him in the same style as he did my regular avatar, to use in videos too! By all means go check out his artwork and hit him up if you need some, he does great work!

At the moment he is kitted out with a square patterned shirt, but I also have a could of other things for him to wear in future videos too!

Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled:

Ironically... Nitro Fueled isn't going to happen just yet. Most people wuld follow up a video on the original with a video on the remake and frankly... the idea of going through the same game again so soon (even if it is a remake) exhausts me!

So instead, at the moment I want to focus on playing the other Crash Racing games, which will also double up as more things to talk about and compare with when the time DOES come for Nitro Fueled... due to that game apparently having an entire season of free post-launch add-on content.

I'll end up being SO late, my video will have more content in that most ;)

Reception:

Not that it matters too much as I really fancied making this video either way but I'm chuffed to see the CTR video has already reached over a thousand views since I published it only a few days ago!

I know this is mainly down to timing on my part, which makes me glad the effort I put into getting everything done before the 21st also paid off... but still.

Considering the size of my channel it's not very often I get some of my "proper" content seen like this. Thanks for all being a part of that!

What is next for Petronious?

As it stands right now, I've actually finished Crash Nitro Kart and am already eyeing up the next game to begin playing TONIGHT.

Assuming I find enough things to say, I think you'll like how I'm going to go about releasing the next couple of videos :D

As well as this, I actually have had an idea for a sort of "Video Essay" type thing that I might try and flesh out into a script for a video sometime. If this happens, it'll also follow and fit quite easily into the time travel malarkey I've set out for the short term future of my videos!
