Here it is guys!! What a chapter, and no wonder it ran over the 6 hour mark. Just to make sure it played right for everyone, I skimmed off the extra 5 minutes, but don't worry. It was only the bit where I explain how the Patreon works (which I think everyone gets by now XD) and a bit of a rant where I was very repetitive (rant is still in, but you will be glad it is a lil shorter XD It was regarding some comments I got regarding Snape's casting in my trailer reaction video).

What a great discussion we had in the Book Club, and you guys definitely changed the way I saw quite a lot of things in this chapter. But one thing we can all agree with - Everybody sucks. XD (In the chapter, not the book club XD).

Hope you have a wonderful weekend, guys! Sorry it was a bit late, as explained before, I forgot to add the music, and it made the video feel very uncanny! XD

In the text the Inquisitorial Squad badge is a silver letter "I", but since I listen to the audiobook I always mistake it for an "eye". 😅 I think Snape puts important memories in the pensieve so Harry won't accidentally see them during occlumency lessons (like the memory of Snape's parents shouting). Personally I don't think Harry's actions are ever influenced by Voldemort other than the scenes where he felt uncharacteristic snake-like anger towards Dumbledore. Snooping is a pretty typical Harry Activity! 😂

S1lm4r1l

I always thought the Fat Friar was a Robin Hood reference. Friar Tuck? Yes Potter and Black were bullies, I don't think anyone denies that. I didn't include it for the sake of time (and my comment was already way too long as it is.) Whilst it is tempting to say that there is a single incident here. You could argue it was two. I definitely agree that everything before Snape uses the term Mudblood was bullying, but after it? It gets more tricky. The simple truth is we are missing a great deal of context around this incident, what we know initially does not paint Potter and Black in a good light. But Snape is hardly innocent either. Harry is largely looking for information about himself. Yes what he does is immoral. But Dumbledore and Snape's decision to deliberately keep Harry in the dark is similarly immoral, particularly as Harry does not trust Snape's intentions at all. I think that argument cuts both ways. The fact that Snape doesn't empty the Pensieve, indeed leaves Harry alone with it indicates that it is not massively important to Snape. I think as far as Harry is concerned, Snape is being obtuse and difficult, especially as Dumbledore has recently told him that he'd be finding out the reasons for his Occlumency lessons soon. Rightly or wrongly, I think Harry's logic is "Well if I'm going to find out soon anyway, why can't I know now?" Remember that Harry is dreaming about this corridor every single night. It must be driving him nuts. Draco does rush into Snape's office, its a cute character moment because he doesn't even knock, just speeds in, which is why he's so surprised by Snape and Harry having their wands out. Snape is supposed to be teaching Harry to defend himself. Dumbledore did not instruct him to violate Harry's privacy. Snape chooses to do that because he thinks that's the best way to motivate Harry. Children bullying each other is far more justifiable than an adult, a teacher bullying children they have a duty of care towards. I think Potter and Black bully Snape for more understandable reasons than Snape's reasons for bullying Harry, Neville and Hermione. Your responses did make me chuckle, and it does prove there's any number of different ways to look at things. TL/DR: My arguments came across more strongly than I intended, and there was a lot you said that I agree with, which I cut for length/time.

Me 2, but Deep fat fryer is a great observation i never picked up on

In response to my comment, you mentioned that you hoped it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the movies. I have to admit that I really have so many issues with the movies that I have trouble watching them anyway. I own all of them and will occasionally watch them but then I just get so frustrated by them that I just want to re-read the books. I have so many hopes for the new TV series, hope it doesn’t disappoint!

Stephen Hert

If Christopher Columbus would’ve directed all the movies, I feel it would’ve been more accurate. The extended version of the Philosopher’s Stone and chamber of secrets had scenes that were directly from the books. And I greatly appreciated that.

Alex Hopps

I hate the fact that the line "its more the fact he exists" has prompted a discussion about race rather than a discussion about how disgusting the attack is. Always love a stewart lee reference though. I beleive the line is "the alpha male havig outrageous political incorrect opions every week for money"

Katerina Katsn

*edited* Hey Veggie! I’m new here - have binged all of your book reviews a couple if mounts ago and just recently joined the Patreon, so this is a very first comment I’m leaving here. Excited to be a part of this amazing community and first and foremost want to thank you wholeheartedly for all the hard work you’re doing as well as the effort and heart you put into this reviews. It’s really exceptional and you cannot begin to imagine how much of a pure joy you are giving us here! That being said, I apologise to start my first commentary on an argument of sorts. I am sorry, but the phrase “well, he didn’t die in battle, he died at his home” regarding James really did rub me the wrong way. That is true: he didn’t die in battle, because in battle he would have a wand and a faire chance to defend himself, which, being a part of the Order of the Phoenix he arguably did countless times. No, he died practically defenceless by the attack he did’t in a bit saw coming. I actually had something else to add to it, but it was thankfully pointed out for me that it wasn’t yet mentioned in a book, so I will hold it for the time being. In any way, the point still stands: the fact that he was murdered at home does not mean that he didn’t have any heroic traits in him. The dismissal with which you portrayed that kinda did shook me a bit. I don’t really blame you, honestly: the light in which James is portrayed in this chapter certainly paints you a picture that’s saying: “well, this guy can’t possibly be a hero that everyone says he is” and makes you want to diminish the good deeds that we know he has done to keep this character in a certain box of a bully to make it easier for ourselves to hate him. I certainly have felt that way after my firsts go through the Harry Potter franchise. The fact is: he certainly is a bully, capable of doing horrendous things. But he also is a hero, whose good qualities shine just as bright as his cruel and arrogant tendencies. Both things really can be true and I personally find it fascinating about his character, giving how little we are actually getting from him in these books. I started my love for Harry Potter series with Snape being my favourite character. I did hate the Marauders on the first go. It’s been about twelve years since then and throughout this time, having as obsessive sort of personality as I do, I went through loads of exchanges of opinions, reading fanfiction and consuming content from the sides of both Snape’s and the Marauder’s fanbase. And ultimately I ended up landing on the Marauders’ side. Not in regard of this particular situation: to be clear, I do NOT justify their behaviour in that scene, it IS completely inexcusable. But in terms of my love for the characters I cannot help but have a special place in my heart for these four (three later on) guys. I would hold most of my reasonings to myself, since, first, this comment is already long as it is, and second, some of them are based on the stuff that is yet to come. I hope I didn’t come across as rude. I am not trying to change your opinion: on the contrary, I actually think that your feelings at this point are absolutely valid. I guess I was just trying to show you a bit of a different perspective, and it is completely up to you whether to accept it or not :)

Alex Hopps

And the classic "Richard the Hamster Hammond... not even a real hamster"

Jacqueline Chaiton

Hi Veggie! To be clear, yes I was referring to the movies when I said you know that Lily and Snape are friends. Regarding Lupin, I don't think you're a terrible person! I love his character too, which is why his lack of intervention is so disappointing. I think your reasoning for why he didn't was correct, but it's not very Gryffindor of him to be so cowardly. The fireworks scene in the movie is a combination of three scenes, the one in this chapter obviously (read in Alan Rickman's voice), the one where they leave the school, and Harry getting the vision. That's all I'll say on that.

Oona M

I agree with your second paragraph, but isn't a bit spoilery?

Alex Hopps

A cowardly man, trapped between 2 different forms of cowardice

Katerina Katsn

Didn’t Harry already get that information in the Prisoner of Azkaban? Or in the movies? I was sure that it was at least implied tbh. If not, then i’m mixing some stuff up and am really sorry then, I will try to rephrase it

Alex Hopps

Ill make this my last comment but with regard to what u said near the end of your chapter analysis about harry not getting bullied and experiencing everyone laughing around him to that extent, and him potentially feeling the feelings of the owner of the memory in that moment, i beleive harry saying he understood how snape felt was in reference to the bullying he received in primary school at the hands of dudley and his gang

Hawwah

[EDIT: It turned out my comment was way off because I misunderstood something Veggie said. I'll still leave the original comment here for context.] Severus wasn't following the Marauders. He wasn't following Lily either. When the exam ended, the entire class (over 100 students) headed outside into the school grounds. Severus just went where everyone else was going. And why wouldn't he? He wanted to unwind a bit and enjoy a summer afternoon outside after a school day full of stressful OWL examinations. Just like everyone else. Why do people assume everything Severus does must have some sinister reason behind it? Severus wasn't following anyone. He was still reading his papers while walking and wasn't paying any attention to his surroundings. The author actually mentions it FOUR times on 1,5 pages. "still absorbed in his own exam paper" "still buried in his exam questions" "still poring over the exam paper and apparently with no fixed idea where he was going" "as deeply immersed in the OWL paper as ever" Severus was minding his own business. He just wanted to be left alone. He didn't provoke anyone and didn't "ask" to be assaulted in an way, shape or form. I'm tired of victim blaming.

VeggieGamer

Thanks Alex, I always appreciate your comments. I had a feeling this would be a rough one for many, but please don't feel the need to limit your comments. They are hugely appreciated!

VeggieGamer

You think I declared what Severus was doing was sinister? I think you need to rewatch the video (which is 6 hours, but that is on you. I literally agreed with you almost 100%) and pay attention.

Alex Hopps

Its hard not to find multiple things to say when im spending several hours listening to someone i tend to agree with alot and have very similar comedic tastes too, especially when your discussing something at length that i have a lot of knowledge and a lot of passion about. I dont wanna spam at you too much though. With regards to the theory on the pensive giving some sort of thoughts or feelings of the memory owner, i really like the theory and its interesting how your brain comes up with so many possibilities ive never even considered. But i just relistened to the last few mins of the chapter and i definitely feel he was talking abiut his own experiences with dudley. Ibreally love the theory though. Will be interested to see if theres any hint of that being true as we spend more and more time in the pensive as the story continues

Hawwah

Marauders fans often claim that Severus deliberately followed the Marauders, hoping to provoke a fight, which means "he got what he asked for". When you asked whether Severus was following the Marauders, I thought this was where you were going. It seems I was wrong. I am sorry. I'm only at 1 hour 49 minutes right now :)

VeggieGamer

You are wrong (sorry for the spoiler). I basically agree with everything you say and actually LOVE the World Cup comparison. You are absolutely on the money with it and I put it over. So please don't accuse me of ignoring the story points before you have watched the entire video (which... to be fair is 6 hours.. which is a lot, I appreciate)

Alex Hopps

Mate, your doing great Absolutely no need to apologise, im not wanting to nit pick you, just didnt want you to have sn incorrect understanding of something so important and frequently relevant as the pensive. Honestly dont feel the need to apologise for misunderstanding, i cant stress enough how great your interpretations are and how great your analysis is

S1lm4r1l

We get drip-fed information about the night Voldemort tried to kill Harry throughout the books. Certainly, Voldemort's recollections of it do show James in a far more positive light than Veggie thinks at the moment.

Katerina Katsn

Yeah, I somehow have forgotten about that and have thought of that context as a common knowledge. My bad. I tried to edit it in a way to be as vague as possible while still sticking to the point, hopefully it came out okey :)

Hawwah

I'm happy to be proven wrong! I will listen to the rest of the video and comment only after that to avoid making another hasty judgment like this. It will have to wait till tomorrow though because it's already almost midnight here. I am truly sorry for the false accusation. Oh yes, the World Cup. I was actually a bit worried you'll scold me for bringing up stuff from previous books but I decided to risk it. I'm glad you liked it. PS: Severus was reading the papers with his exam questions. I believe he was considering how well he did on each question and counting how many points he was likely going to get. I'm now going to log off. Thank you for the conversation! Good night!

Jacqueline Chaiton

Sorry for the second comment but I think the term you were thinking of regarding the teachers and their interactions with Umbridge is malicious compliance.

Garfnob

or the lines could come off as raciest to the younger, more sensitive generations. also to the non autistic people that read between the lines then ignore the lines. right or wrong there are people that will think it is raciest. like the people that say how honorably one person is treating another in the book. when that is just how things where in the 90s and most people did not think twice about it. i was bullied worse then Snape was in this chapter and it did not impact me hardly at all. i know everyone handles things different. i grew up in the era when people took the saying about sticks and stones to heart. that is likely why i do not comment on it hardly at all. it is not something worth mentioning, it is just life in high school. rant done :) the Lupin thing - the same as Snape. it is a reason got the actions and i believe you have it correct, but it is not an excuse. i do not think it was the "Voldemort effect" it was Harry wanted information he was denied. as stated in the chapter he thought it might be about Voldemort"s plan. dose not change it being wrong but changes the intent. harry did not want to know about Snape's past. P.S. Harry knows how it feels to be bullied not because of the Pensieve. he knows because of Dudley.

Garfnob

the bullying encounter, sequence of events. many comments seam to have the events out of order. some only seam to remember the threat to de-pants Snape and not the lead up. this was a fight at a magic school with a circle of a kids cheering. not a one sided beating/bullying. -Jams addressed Snape with an insulting nickname. -Snape drew his wand (possibly expecting an attack. we do not know.) -James disarmed Snape (we do not know if James already had his want out or was just a faster draw) -James restrained Snape as he was diving for his wand. (did not suspend him at this point, or attack in any way. they kept Snape from attacking them.) -James and black verbally mocked Snape. (possibly there intent from the start. we do not know. they could have attacked Snape but did not. ) -Snape spat vulgar language and attempted spells (we do not know what ones) -James washed Snape's mouth out with magic soup. (this is the first point that could be called an attack. it also stops Snape from attempting to attack them.) -discussion with Lilly -Snape lacerated James's face (this tells us Snape intended was to attack when he pulled his want at the start as he attacked the first chance he got) -James hung Snape upside down -Lilly confronted James. -James dropped Snape -more conversation -Snape calls Lilly a slur -James threatens to removing Snape's pants. (did not hang him again as some have sugested) (did i miss anything?) I think James's response was restrained. i would have done far worse if someone slashed my face with a knife while my back was turned. Snape is the one that escalated. he could have disarmed James and Black or left while they were speaking with Lilly, but he went with cutting. not saying James and Black where in the right. the fact Snape responded to humiliation with cutting a defenseless person (James back was turned) makes him loos any hi ground he had.

John Phillips

Harry understood how it felt when he saw Snape being humiliated in front of onlookers because Harry himself had been bullied by Dudley and his gang constantly when they were in school together and there probably were onlookers that saw it or participated in it.

Badger Kat

I agree with you that it is 100% bullying. I didn’t comment on it in my book club comment because there were other things I wanted to talk about more. I’ve never been that big of a fan of the marauders, even though I know a lot of people really want to see something new (story/movie) from the marauder’s time at Hogwarts. I can appreciate Sirius and Remus much more as adults.

Simon audsley

The marauders are still children, the death eaters are not, children have a habit of doing stupid things so their actions are not to be viewed in the same light, also we know how Harry's father is different when he is an adult. Having not read comments before my post I didn't realise that no one had mentioned or even possible even noticed what is actually happening in the memory, in regards to Harry's father Harry's father isn't bullying snape out of sadism, he is doing it to attract lily's attention. throughout the scene outside everything he is doing is an attempt at this when he is playing with the snitch he keeps snatching glances at a group of girls, in other word he's watching lily and her friends hoping she'll notice when he thinks these fail he goes for the nuclear option by going after snape a person who up until this point (implied) is on good terms with lily and who he loathes. This all blows up in his face, Ironic really as it's quite obvious that lily has been watching him too, mentioning his antics such as playing with the snitch which he has only just been doing and how he keeps messing with his hair a personality quirk that someone uninterested would not notice. To avoid confusion i future I vote you refer to harry's father as daddy potter from now on. Also I saw the dooby duck live show.

Gugurupurasu Daikirai

You could have shit in PG-13 and for quite a few times, which was my point. They'll even let you get away with an F bomb or two

Dara Jeeling

It's mire the thing that they promised BOOK ACCURACY and Snape has a very distinct book description - which is salow skin and white as marble. So... yeah. I will not watch the show because of this single casting, all the others, I like (or even love) My son wants to atch and he is welcome to watch it. But it is definetly not for me. I already had a NON accurate book Snape in the movies and I really wanted to meet book Snape and however good the actor is (and he is good no discussion on that one) for me personally he is a big casting error. There are things that should be considered when doing a race swap and SNAPE is like thw worst character for a race swap if you have ever looked into what should be taken into consideration. I can't wait for them to come u with either black Lupin or nlack Black ( and then I am going to be laughing my head off)

Cari Ann

I completely agree with you that if told correctly no one should assume James hates snape because of his skin color in the series. They just need to tell the full story, and yea I agree the people who called it lynching were the ones being racist, especially when we go into the next 2 books and learn even more of the backstory. I cannot wait for half blood prince, its my favorite book in the series and least favorite movie lol

Cari Ann

I was hoping for black lupin, thought it would help with people assuming it will be racist for people to not like snape.

Dara Jeeling

Lupin would be great for a race swap. His srory does kot really change. I also think - now with the backlash they need a black Marauder. James does not work..Peter.... mmmme... he is a desth ester as well.... Sirius... wouldnot work canon wise, since his parents are both Blacks, so if he is, that would mean Narcissa and Bellatrix need to be as well. Which would leave Lupin

Garfnob

Veggie. am i blocked from DMing you, or it is my Patreon acting up? i was going to answer your questions you deleted.

Grace

The Half Blood Prince movie is just appalling to me. When I first watched it without reading the book, I thought it was okay (it never was a favorite of mine) but after reading the book, I was shocked at how badly they adapted it. Like, no other movie has as many baffling choices as that one.

Grace

I wanna clarify something regarding what the author said about Harry ending up with Hermione. It wasn't as much of a "I regret putting Hermione with Ron". Here's the quote : She noted that, in hindsight, Ron and Hermione might have needed relationship counseling to make it work. "The Ron-Hermione pairing was done for personal reasons and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, rather than for literary reasons". That's all she says. Basically she implies that the Ron-Hermione pairing would've needed some work in real life and it was done for personal reasons.

Cari Ann

Yea I agree, I didn't read this book until years later so I also felt the same way, like how did they mess it up so badly smh. There is 1 scene I really liked that's added to the movie that wasn't in the book, when harry and Ron fight for the better looking potions book, think thats my highlight of the whole movie without any dialog lol.

S1lm4r1l

Black people can have sallow skin. I think people are judging this way too soon, before giving it a chance.

Badger Kat

Does anyone know how Veggie finds and watches the movie scenes for each chapter? Is there a list somewhere that gives you timestamps of what to watch for each chapter? Or does he just hunt around and find them manually? I’d like to try to do this going forward, but I couldn’t find a list online anywhere and I’m not sure I’ll bother if it’s just hunting around in the movie. Thanks!

Ziro the Hutt

You and your six hours again Veggie. You could upload a 24 hour vid and it will be fine!

Methanoutput

Ahhhh now i see why the picture makes perfect sense! Cant wait to listen when i actually got more time, i am still not finished with the last book club, my master thesis is devouring my time :/

Katie

I agree with your take on the casting of Snape. It's so disappointing. And if they have to change the race of one of the Marauder's to make them not look racist then that's just bad casting in the first place. If your casting then has a snowball effect for changes then it was clearly a poor decision. They said it was going to be faithful to the source material and they lied.
