I felt like it would be kind of a copout at this point to reveal that Harold is cruel and abusive, so there would be no guilt about cheating on him. Not to say that he's totally innocent in all this... when Charlene was first introduced the first thing we saw her do was try to give him love and affection, but he would repeatedly rebuff her. I'm trying to write them more as a couple that has fallen out of love over the years, but they're just not willing to actually admit it to each other.
