I've long recognized the ability of sports to tell narratives, but I never found them compelling because the gamut of narratives you can tell with sports is limited by the nature of the medium, and as a storyteller you're at the mercy of what actually *happens*. You can't just decide that team X is going to have an amazing come-from-behind season, if they end up... not doing so.

I wish I hadn't bet all my money on Hat Dan...

This video was gold! I love quirky subjects like this!

Fascinating. Not something I would have ever guessed existed. It seems so insulting to the players if this is someone's way of watching the match. But using the RFID data to create a real sports narrative in a cartoon setting is genius. I'm ambivalent. Has anyone asked players what they think of games being viewed this way? Maybe it's cool to be Bart Simpson sometimes.

"if anyone needs me, I'll be in the end zone" is kinda good

I care nothing for NFL (college ball is where it’s at) but the inherent silliness of the whole thing is super interesting. I vaguely remember the Simpsons game being a thing, but it looks like it was fun to watch.

I’ve never fully watched an NFL game but I went to the Grey cup with my family and the most striking thing was the ads. Like every tiny piece of down time is filled with a sponsorship from tires or groceries or cars or something, every flat surface is a billboard, it’s truly nonstop. I guess I’m from a generation more advertising-skeptical but I couldn’t stand it

Kiki

I only follow sports insofar as I am required to as a citizen of Chicago (rip my stint trying to be a White Sox fan lol), so this is the first time I’m hearing about all of this. What corporate insanity. The point about sports developing through technology was really interesting though: I had no idea that they put RFID chips on the players to track them!

Jesse

Okay cool video but Hat Dan is gonna f***in' slaughter you next time m8.

I don't want to be rude, but you sound like you're not actually a fan of sport, because that's not how storytelling in sport works. Sure, there's a big component of amateur forecasting, but that never takes precedence over narratives describing what *has* happened, and the beauty is in how what actually happens contradicts the forecasting. Narratives in sport are built from events and not the other way around like in writing a work of fiction.

dirtside

I'm aware of that, but you're still limited by what has happened: you can't apply a comeback narrative to a team that doesn't actually *have* a comeback. And regardless, the gamut of possible outcomes is still limited by the nature of the sport itself: no matter what happens, you can never ever have a narrative where team A looks like it's about to be defeated by team B, when suddenly team C runs onto the field and saves the day, because... sports don't allow that!

Pendleton

I’d heard about the chips before. I think they feed the data into apps for wither Fantasy Football or gambling. I heard you can literally gamble on the outcome of these stats on like FanDuel or something.

Tom

Utterly appalling. I guess we won't be getting real bread.

Hearing Dan (rightfully) mock my team... made a single tear track down my cheek... But don't worry us Falcons fans are used to disappointment. I'll bounce back in no time.

It isn't like that in other sports elsewhere. In association football in Europe, for example, while play is ongoing, you NEVER interrupt it for advertising. You might put a little card in the corner occasionally, but taking an ad break while a half is happening in unthinkable. You hear anecdotes about it happening from time to time years ago, but as a European soccer fan it's so hard to imagine that they feel like accounts of finding a four-sided triangle in nature. And within England at least, this isn't unique to soccer. Rugby union, rugby league, cricket; basically any televised sport I've ever seen here has treated the playing time as sacrosanct and fit the ads in around the game and not the other way around. And on the subject of the ads themselves: even in the biggest domestic sporting event in the word, the Champions League final, the ads aren't anything special. You pay top dollar (or perhaps top Euro) for an advertising slot there, but you run the same ads you've been running all tournament, and they're just bog-standard ads. No special productions or anything. Things *can* be different; the horribly overcommercialised nature of gridiron (even relative to the sport presided over by FIFA, which is really going some) is not a fact of nature.

I'm suddenly having flashbacks from the infamous "The Simpsons Wrestling", the last videogame I ever rented in a rental store.

Dear Sir or Madam, you cannot possibly tell me that *European Football* is somehow better about advertising! The teams don't even have jersey designs, they're just billboards! They don't even have a crest, just Company Names everywhere! Covering the entire thing back, front, and sides!

This is very late but I’m 99% sure I’m the only person on the Patreon who has worked for Next Gen Stats so it was a very surreal moment to do the Leo DiCaprio meme about this
