In Japanese the letter (and the sound) "L" does not exist, so when they read foreign words out loud, they pronounce the letter "L" as "R". For example -- "online" would be pronounced as "onrine". Therefore "Killer" (killa) would be "Kira".

the itch with deathnote is SO real after watching your episode 2 watchalong i couldn't help myself and immediately went to rewatch one episode ahead of you just to remind myself what you'd be getting into until your next deathnote watchalong i ended up accidentally rewatching the whole thing and finished it in three days 😭😭 even after multiple rewatches and knowing exactly how things go and when, death note's great, can't get enough of it. cant wait for your next upload!

Unfortunate thing about the OST is that Hideki Taneuchi made only a couple anime osts in mid 2000s. Both Death note and Kaiji osts are great, but he was caught with marijuana and was basically thrown out of the industry for that. Its a shame that such a talented persons career was ruined by something so insignificant.

re: The conversation around criminal justice, when death note was written in the early 2000s the Japanese criminal justice system was seen as extremely ineffectual and lenient with sentences despite having high conviction rates. A very famous example of this was the murder of Junko Furuta, where a teenage girl was abducted and brutally tortured and raped by a group of boys. The perpetrators got between 7 to 20 years in prison, two of the boys got a year in juvie as they 'only' participated in her rape and torture and not the murder. Furthermore the penalty for possession of weed is 7 years. (This is not me arguing for the virtues of capital punishment but just providing a bit of context) When I first watched Death Note I thought Light was a bit of a nutcase and kind of cartoonishly evil, but upon learning more about the cultural context I felt a bit more sympathetic towards him (he's evil, but maybe slightly less so). There was an American musical adaptation a few years ago that many people didn't like because Light was portrayed as a sympathetic anti-capitalist. He is originally supposed to be a 'guy who has the right idea but immediately takes it too far and lets the power get to his head' sort of figure but divorced from the cultural context which he was written in he comes across as more openly malicious and 100% driven by the 'wrong' motives. I think it's interesting how different people find different readings of him to be more compelling. Regardless of his motivations, he is emblematic of the reasons why dolling out justice should not be left to any one individual.

The podcast idea sounds so interesting!! It's sounds like a really fun way to be introduced to different genres and artforms. I totally agree about the lack of curiosity thing. I hate how liking foreign or black and white films has become associated with being pretentious :(

Forgot to say this, the world of death note is definitely set in the real world, so everything you mention about the cat and mouse between L and Kira definitely comes from a place of groundedness and realism in there world. Aside from the shinigami death note stuff, the show sticks more with the realism of the polices decisions and society's as well and you'll see that more with these upcoming episodes.

I’ve always found it really stupid that artists or any kind of public figures (especially in east asian culture) seem to get completely cancelled and abandoned by the industry once they’re found guilty of drug possession and usage. Unlike other crimes, self inflicted harm seems like a stupid reason to write someone off and remove whatever platform they had online. Not advocating for drug legalistation, but unlike politicians or other jobs where important decisions need to be made I don’t think a person should have their work discredited because they may not be in the best mental state and in most cases it’s not as if these people are crack head addicts shaking from the thought of not being able to take drugs.

I adore that you really listen to your audience, thank you.
