To answer your question about what this is based on, there are some aspects of it that are loosely based on Bobby Fischer (especially having to go to Russia and beat them at the height of the cold war). It's also adapted from a novel of the same name, which is basically the same story.

Now she gets it.

Perfect ending to a Perfect show 👌

Teegan, I've seen a lot of reactions by a lot of reactors over the years, and this was the most joyful one yet. It was perfect, and, in fact, the places I knew would hit hard you absorbed more deeply than I expected. At the end, Beth IS dressed like a chess piece, but, more specifically, the queen. The show's title is perfect; it's a chess opening, sure, but it also hits right at Beth. The whole show goes along so well, every scene paying huge dividends, and then it raises the stakes during the last few minutes. The music as Beth is working out the winning strategy is intense and fits the action perfectly. Casting Anya Taylor-Joy was the best decision imaginable. Lastly, here's a movie title to file away now that you're done - Searching For Bobby Fischer. It's also chess-centric, but the heart of the movie is in the kid's relationship with the people around him. It's also the true story of Josh Waitzkin. It stars Joe Mantegna, Joan Allen, Laurence Fishburne, Ben Kingsley and Max Pomeranc as Josh. I'll put a notice and screenshot in chat and trailer if there is one. Anyway, great reaction and I'm so glad we watched this "together."

If you like the short 7 episode miniseries format, there is another great show on Netflix called Godless, it is a western, and it also has Thomas Brodie-Sangster, who played Benny, in it. And Jeff Daniels from Dumb and Dumber.

I admit, the moment we saw Beth’s support team in New York absolutely got me too. Fun fact: every game we see Harmon play in the movie were based upon real chess games played by some of the world’s best, chosen by chess coach Bruce Pandolfini and former world champion Garry Kasparov…some games were used unaltered, others were “improved upon”. The average viewer would not see it, but to those who know chess, every scenario was a real game scenario that was you could trace back to the first move and every strategy was very real. It was a spectacularly done series, and the detail shows through.

A big +1 for Godless (2017) (western) (7 episodes) [IMDb 8.2]. Nominated for 13 Emmys including Outstanding Limited Series. Won 3 Emmys including Jeff Daniels (who is stunning). A female-driven ensemble cast. Jack O'Connell (of Sinners) is excellent as a lead (subtle nuanced acting) in “Godless” (2017).

I started watching this back when it first came out and could not get into it and quit early on. Watching it with your insight made it quite enjoyable and rewarding to watch. i WAS somewhat put off by, and take out of the story by the revisionist history depicting the USSR almost as nothing more than a rival day camp to the U.S. In 1968 The USSR invaded Czechoslovakia to put down civilian protests seeking more freedom and artistic freedom and expression In the USSR was heavily censored. There is no way the Soviets would have allowed the cheering fans outside the match where she was whipping all the Russians. Also you can be sure the phones were tapped and the conference call at the end would have been quickly lost due to "technical difficulties" once the KGB heard the strategies being discussed. The USSR is generally believed to have killed between 50 Million and 80 Million people in the 20th Century. The Majority of these were OUTSIDE of World War 2. I understand that all of this was not the point of this show but international events like this in Europe in the Cold War were hotbeds of potential spies, defectors, and miscreants of all kinds. Because she was so high profile the escort was there to protect her from someone else's actions that might accidentally or deliberately try to compromise or impugn her actions or comments for their own devious purposes.
