Hello everyone! I hope you enjoy my detailed psychological analysis of episode 10 of Avatar: The Last Airbender! Sokka opened his Manicare business in the last episode, with Appa being the only customer, and in this episode, Katara opened her water-jet car wash business. Like brother, like sister.

My main takeaways from the episode

1) Absolutely heartbreaking for Katara with her betrayal, after experiencing trauma bonding and increased emotional intimacy with Jet, who represents moral disengagement, blind rage, and idealistic extremism

2) Sokka is the true MVP of the episode, kickstarting the episode with his gut instinct, and ending the episode with his moral character and courage, displaying that true leadership has little to do with charisma or showmanship

3) Aang continues to display his newly improved airbending fighting style, incorporating his waterbending skills, cognitive flexibility, and everything that he has learned along his journey

Also, since I plan to react to all 3 seasons of ATLA, the new movie, and other adaptations before we die of old age, I will watch 2 episodes each recording, starting with episodes 11-12. Longer yapping sessions, incoming :)

Happy weekend, everyone, and I hope you all have a meaningful week to come~

A thing I really like in this episode is when an old man from the Fire Nation vouches for them and defends them after he was attacked, while a few episodes ago it was an old man from the Earth Kingdom who sold them out to the Fire Nation after he was saved. It really shows that anyone from anywhere is capable of good or evil regardless of their governments.

Also Momo is the combination of a bat and a lemur but is colloquially called a winged lemur within the show. His personality and mannerisms are based on one of the staff members irl cat (I forget whos).

I cannot wait to see you react to ep 12. You will see why!

Jet really is an incredible fighter. Very few benders are able to fight Aang one-on-one. Charismatic and a quick thinker, too. It's too bad he's a manipulative extremist who has likely killed before and will kill again. I think it's cool that they gave such a violent character weapons that are meant for disarming and not killing. Sokka's instincts to walk may not have saved them from the fire nation, but it likely did save that town. Jet didn't come up with the dam plan overnight - the fact that the town has a dam at all probably means the river ebbs and flows depending on the time of year, and if waterbenders hadn't appeared he'd have just waited for that... and there would have been no one to warn the townspeople. The fact that the old man Sokka saved is the reason the town listened is just the cherry on top. Aang's seed of doubt - I think that was planted the moment Sokka told them about the old man. Unlike Katara, a crush wasn't clouding his eyes. Even if he was willing to still believe Jet, I think he also was aware that Sokka wouldn't lie about his own impression of what happened. I love Katara's little horrified moment of repeating "Jet wouldn't do that" to herself even though she clearly no longer believed it. Of all of them, she was the one Jet manipulated the most because he clearly set up their interactions to encourage her to develop a crush on him, too. At least she channeled her rage into bending proficiency! It's been a while since we've seen any ice.

Ahhhh I was waiting for this one. Jet really is a great character, his complexities from his trauma make him both relatable yet at the same time unforgivable with his extremes in idealism as you broke down. How far people will go for their version of “justice” even at the cost of those they are supposedly doing this for. Also Jet and his Freedom Fighters gave me Lost Boys vibes from the movie Hook, about Peter Pan (if youve seen it, fun fact, Zukos VA is the voice of Rufio). I also feel a bit like Kataras experience with Haru helped shape her experience with Jet this episode, as well as her rose-colored glasses. Her and Haru also bonded through trauma, and their town was actively wronged by the Fire Nation. Back then, Sokka had wanted to leave to protect their group, and Katara stayed to help. So of course she wanted to do the same here. Ideally you’d think she should trust her brother over a stranger they just met, but she’s very familiar with Sokka’s cautious and protective personality, and it clashes sometimes with Katara’s hopeful nature and sense of justice.
You know also I love how much you’re noticing Aang’s growing fighting styles, and incorporating water bending moves that he’s learning over time. And Katara is also getting much better at her own bending (compared to episode 1 when she could barely catch a fish). We’re not even at the North Pole yet to train under a Waterbending Master, but we’re learning quite a bit already.
Happy to hear about the double episodes! Makes sense. I’ll probably sound like a broken record, but next week especially is going to be really good. You will definitely have things to yap about. I can’t wait (but I will)

Also regarding some people acting nonchalant at Aangs Avatar prescence: I think that’s a pretty normal depiction personally. You’re going to have people who are shocked, their prayers have been answered. People who are grateful, awed, and maybe even upset. You’re also going to have people who really don’t care either way. The Avatar has been far removed from this generation, and the previous for so long, been fighting their own battles for so long, that Aangs return doesn’t really mean much to them. Similar to meeting like you said, God or a celebrity. Some people will fall to their knees, others honestly will not even care. Fascinating.
