Michael kindly allowed Erika and Lucy to join us for figure drawing on Wednesday night, so they got a taste of my usual Wednesday evenings! We had Brittany for the night and started off with our 5-minute poses.

Our cartoonist majority won us a few extra ten-minute poses, which are my favorite...

... but as is probably evident due to the unfinished bits in these ten-minute drawings, I was pretty relieved to get on to the 20-minutes.

This final 20-minute pose was drawn while we listened to Gorecki's Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, which moved me to the brink of tears, and definitely changed the way I saw every line and shadow on her body. Woof, highly recommended, if you need something to kick some emotion into you!

And we wrapped up with one ten-minute:

Lucy posted her beautiful China marker drawings from this session just an hour ago, so you can go have a look at her representation of the same model, from about 90 degrees from where I was sitting!

The Gorecki is one of my favorite pieces of contemporary classical music. So beautiful. And it introduced me to soprano Dawn Upshaw who is a favorite singer of mine, now.

That music… the first time I ever heard it was at a concert, and I could feel the music before I could actually hear a single note. I was crying silent tears before the music started to build. Amazing stuff. Then you read the back story to the symphony. Double kick to the gut.

Amazing on every level. I so love seeing the results of these figure drawings. At this point, after doing so many of these, do you still feel any resistance when drawing a specific part of the human body or a specific pose?

Oh god, I don't know the backstory! I'm gonna look for it on vinyl and I'll give myself the go-ahead to read about it then. Thank you!

Man, great question! I still haven't fully grasped what's going on inside of arms. Or, at least, the whole length of the arm. Knees are also tricky, but I feel pretty comfortable simplifying them at least. I'll have to think about this question a bit more, thanks for putting it in my head!
