Hello, and happy Friday afternoon to most of you!
I'm officially in Denmark, and the book I draw my Daily Comics in is back in Shepherdstown, so (as you've likely guessed by now) I don't have a pile of daily comics to share with you today. BUT... I wanted to show you some work by some other fantastic cartoonists!
Allow Sweepy Thursday Travel Danielle to explain:
(Thanks to Cat for the tiny travel notebook!!)
I managed to get 4 hours of sleep during the overnight flight to Brussels, which was just enough to fuel me through carrying all my luggage on the train and along the hilly cobblestone streets to get to the Comic Arts Museum!
I'd been here once before, in 2018 with Sonja, and had been shocked to find an original page of Blacksad hanging on a wall, which made me nearly piss my pants. (It was SMALL!! I think he works at-scale?! AUGH, incredible.)
So, clearly they have great taste! I had to go back.
This time I did not nearly piss my pants, but I did find a lot of good art! Here are the photos I took, barely edited, with a photo of the placard underneath (I missed the first one).
Enjoy!
Okay I lied, I did almost piss my pants again - my friend Cab's art was one of the first pieces I saw!! Cab is the unbelievably talented creator of U Town, a graphic novel that started around the same time as Elephant Town that I HIGHLY recommend!! (I can't seem to find it anywhere online, but it was shared on her Patreon when she was making it!)
I love Guy Delisle's books, and to me this style looked much looser and more scratchy and fun than his usual work - very Dustin Harbin, imo (a high compliment). So I took some closeups.
Around the corner I spotted yet another friend's work! Thom (Thomas Blais-Leblanc) is another Canadian artist I met via Boum at TCAF a few years ago. He's such a sweetheart and he excels at making silent comics, which is a FLEX!!
Speaking of Boum, I figured that if those two fellow French-Canadian artists were featured here, she must have something in here, too.
In the meantime...
I love when cartoonists' sketchbooks are on display!
The amount of EFFORT this guy put into this page! I wish I would've taken a photo of the whole thing - he redrew that pile of cars like three times!!
I AM THE MOTHERFUCKER!
From of a whole display of Belgian artist Nix's Kinky & Cosy, I only took one pic because this book design is outta this world:
One of the special exhibits upstairs was this incredible walk-through experience for the book Alone, Not even scared (to be scared!), but it was hard to take pictures of! You just have to see it in person (it's up til November!).
This was the least immersive part, imo, but the easiest to photograph:
The rest was like walking through a cave edged with well-lit panels from the book, and then a little maze of 3D cutouts of panels from the book featured throughout the walls. It was so cool!
One more sketchbook pic (uncredited)...
After one last look through the first section, to see if I'd somehow missed Boum's work, I found yet another Canadian pal's work on the wall!
This is a page by Karl Kerschl, whom you may remember from his old webcomic The Abominable Charles Christopher!
By the end my buttcrack was telling me it was time to leave (the museum isn't air conditioned), so I headed back to my cobblestone+rollerbag nightmare and hopped back on the train to the airport. I did take a picture of one large old building to prove I glanced at the architecture at least once!
By the time I landed in Denmark, I found out that Boum DID have work in there, and I DID still miss it after retracing my steps twice! The exhibit all these Canadian cartoonists was in changes every 3 months, which I think is so cool. Something new every season!
We're waking up very very early Saturday to go visit Sweden for the day, and I've fallen asleep twice while arranging this post, so I'm going to hej-hej on outta here. I'll be back for Sunday night's regular Elephant Town update! 💤
